First: Understand What You Are Actually Buying
Sterling silver (925) is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper, for strength. Pure silver at 99.9% is too soft for jewellery. 925 is the international standard for real silver jewellery.
Silver-plated is a base metal - brass, copper or nickel - with a microns-thin silver coating that wears through, usually within months of daily contact.
German silver / nickel silver contains no silver at all. It is a copper-nickel-zinc alloy. It is a legitimate material, but it is not silver, and it is a common nickel-allergy trigger.
Rhodium-plated silver is real 925 silver with a thin rhodium layer for extra shine and tarnish resistance. This is a genuine upgrade, not a substitute.
If a listing does not clearly state 925 or sterling silver, assume it is not.
The Five Checks Before You Add to Cart
1. Look for the 925 stamp
Genuine sterling silver is stamped 925, .925 or STER - usually inside a ring band, on a clasp, or on the back of a pendant. In India, BIS hallmarking for silver is a further quality assurance layer.
2. Check the weight
Silver has real density. If a chain feels weightless for its size, it is likely hollow or plated. Product pages that list gram weight are being transparent; ones that hide it often have a reason.
3. Read the gemstone description precisely
“Ruby” and “ruby-coloured” are different products. So are “natural”, “lab-grown”, “treated” and “simulant”. None of these are dishonest by themselves - a lab-grown stone is chemically identical to a natural one - but the price should reflect which you are getting. Check this carefully on ruby rings, emerald rings and sapphire rings.
4. Check the setting, not just the stone
Prong settings hold light better but snag on fabric. Bezel settings are more secure and better for daily wear. For diamond rings and solitaire pendants, a secure setting matters more than a slightly larger stone.
5. Read the return and resize policy before, not after
Sale-period returns are often shorter. Ring resizing is the most common post-purchase need - confirm whether it is offered and at what cost.
What Is Genuinely Worth Buying in a Sale
Classics you will wear for years. Plain and textured bands from silver rings, studs and hoops from silver earrings, and a versatile 18-inch chain from silver necklaces. These never date.
Gemstone pieces where the discount is meaningful. Amethyst pendants, emerald pendants and ruby pendants carry higher base prices, so a genuine sale price moves the needle.
Gifting stock for the season ahead. Raksha Bandhan, Karwa Chauth, Diwali and wedding season all follow within four months. Buying karwa chauth pieces and gifts for marriage in an August sale is straightforwardly cheaper than buying them in October.
